Common Liturgy (NLT)

This Common Liturgy of the New Living Tradition can be celebrated on any occasion, by any number of Participants, with any number of primary Celebrants. The central working varies by occasion. In solitary celebration, “we” and “us” may be retained (referring to all spirits, not just the Celebrant), but certain other adaptations of language may be desired, and responses may generally be omitted.

Ingathering of Participants

Gather outside Temple, greeting one another or in silence (as appropriate for occasion).

This occasion of ________ provides us an opportunity to celebrate ________. Introduces occasion and rite; declares purpose of working.

Declare (in turns) what will be left behind (personal distractions) and will be brought along (personal intentions) when entering Temple.

Having declared our purpose and intentions, before we begin our rite, let us set aside whatever may contrary or adverse, gathering the entirety of our selves—Will, Soul, Mind, Body, and Spirit—here and now in perfect peace and perfect trust. Strike singing bowl or ring bell. Pause for guided “grounding and centering” meditation.

So mote it be!

Response: So mote it be!

Now, therefore, in perfect peace and perfect trust, let us join again in that unbroken chain of human spirits who, from the forgotten past to the unimagined future, have observed the sacred occasions of human life in Nature for the purpose of sparking personal, communal, and global transformation.

Let us enter this Temple of our own making, a sacred and liminal place that is not a place and time that is not a time, a here and now that shall become for us the very center and nexus of the Universe.

Process into Temple, singing processional chant(s).

Consecration of Temple

May that which is without correspond to that which is within: Let us and this Temple visible be blessed and consecrated by the union of our sacred intentions with this incense and this salt water, vessels of the four Elements that compose all of Nature’s Creation.

I exorcise you, vessel of Fire and Air, of whatever may be contrary or adverse, and I charge you for our sacred purposes.

Starting in East, smudge Temple sunwise, saying: By Fire and Air, be blessed and consecrated.

I exorcise you, vessel of Water and Earth, of whatever may be contrary or adverse, and I charge you for our sacred purposes.

Starting in East, asperge Temple sunwise, saying: By Water and Earth, be blessed and consecrated.

By the four elements, this Temple and all who gather here and now are blessed and consecrated to our rite. So mote it be!

Response: So mote it be!

In this blessed and consecrated Temple visible, let us now build the Temple invisible by conjuring our Circle, summoning the Guardians, inviting the Kindreds, and invoking Divinity.

Conjuring of Circle

May that which is below correspond to that which is above: Let us trace the image of the sun, moon, and all the heavenly bodies around us and our Temple by conjuring our Circle.

Starting in East, circumambulate Temple sunwise, saying: We conjure this Circle, that it would establish the boundary of our sacred and liminal Temple, shield us against whatsoever may be contrary or adverse, preserve us in perfect peace and perfect trust, and magnify the transformative effects of our rite. So mote it be!

Response: So mote it be!

Calling of Quarters

Into our Temple visible and invisible, bounded by our Circle, let us call the Guardians of Power, Love, Truth, and Life to protect us as we work our rite.

Quarter calls proceed sunwise through two complete circles, starting in East, continuing through West, South, and North, and finishing in East.

We turn to the East, direction of the sun at its rising, realm of Fire. To the East and its Watcher, Aldebaran, we send peace that we might receive peace. Guardians of the East, Guardians of Power, we summon, stir, and call you forth to protect this Temple and join us in our rite. Hail and welcome!

Response: Hail and welcome!

We turn to the West, direction of the sun at its setting, realm of Water. To the West and its Watcher, Antares, we send peace that we might receive peace. Guardians of the West, Guardians of Love, we summon, stir, and call you forth to protect this Temple and join us in our rite. Hail and welcome!

Response: Hail and welcome!

We turn to the South, direction of the sun at its triumphing, realm of Air. To the South and its Watcher, Regulus, we send peace that we might receive peace. Guardians of the South, Guardians of Truth, we summon, stir, and call you forth to protect this Temple and join us in our rite. Hail and welcome!

Response: Hail and welcome!

We turn to the North, direction of the sun at its hiding, realm of Earth. To the North and its Watcher, Fomalhaut, we send peace that we might receive peace. Guardians of the North, Guardians of Life, we summon, stir, and call you forth to protect this Temple and join us in our rite. Hail and welcome!

Response: Hail and welcome!

As we work our rite, the Guardians of Power, Love, Truth, and Life protect our thrice-circled Temple and all who gather here and now. So mote it be!

Response: So mote it be!

Invitation of Kindreds

From our Temple, blessed and consecrated against all that may be contrary or adverse, bounded by our sacred Circle, and guarded by Power, Love, Truth, and Life, we radiate our peace that we might be a source of peace for the whole world and that we might receive peace from the whole world, binding the whole world together in peace.

Let us meditate upon the image of the World Tree, whose roots, trunk, and branches have been called the axis mundi that binds the Kindreds of all places and times inseparably. Pause for guided visualization.

So mote it be!

Response: So mote it be!

Gathered around the World Tree, which binds the whole world together, let us invite and welcome those Kindreds from all the worlds who would join us in perfect peace and perfect trust.

Kindreds around us in the world that is, forces of land, sea, and sky in the present place and time, we honor you, and we offer you this grain, a token gift given in gratitude for all that we receive from you today.

You honored Kindreds of the world that is who would join us in perfect peace and perfect trust, we invite you to our Temple. Accept our offering, and join in our rite!

Response: Accept our offering, and join in our rite!

Kindreds below us in the world that was, forces of our predecessors of locus, soma, and psyche, we honor you, and we offer you this wine, a token gift given in gratitude for all that we have received from you in days past.

You honored Kindreds of the world that was who would join us in perfect peace and perfect trust, we invite you to our Temple. Accept our offering, and join in our rite!

Response: Accept our offering, and join in our rite!

Kindreds above us in the world that may and will be, forces of inspiration, vision, and direction, we honor you, and we offer you this incense, a token gift given in gratitude for all that we will receive from you in days to come.

You honored Kindreds of the world that may and will be who would join us in perfect peace and perfect trust, we invite you to our Temple. Accept our offering, and join in our rite!

Response: Accept our offering, and join in our rite!

Though the World Tree binds us ever to the three worlds and all the world, especially here and now, the Kindreds of past, present, and future join us in working our rite. So mote it be!

Response: So mote it be!

Invocation of Divinity

We have gathered to transform ourselves through experience of Divinity, which is like a child within us, born of the mystical union of the Goddess, symbol of the potential of undifferentiated matter and energy, with the God, symbol of the laws and forces that actualize the One All of the Universe. Let us draw upon the Power of these potent generative archetypes, bringing the two Deities once again together in divine union within each of us, as we prepare for the central working of our rite of ________.

Ancient and eternal Mother Goddess, Divine Lady, we call upon you here and now: Let us experience your presence among us. Let the divinity within the spirit of this your servant, ________, speak for you to the divinity within the spirit of each of us. May each of us hear you well.

Listen to my voice of the ancient and eternal Mother Goddess. I have spoken under many names, in many forms and guises. Still I whisper from every particle and wave of the vast Universe. I who am all matter and energy became in My very body the galaxies, all their stars and planets, and everything therein. You and all My children dwell forever within Me, who am your Origin and Destination. You know My voice, and you hear Me, for I call unto you from within you. Strike singing bowl or ring bell. Pause for silent meditation.

Divine Lady, hail and welcome!

Response: Hail and welcome!

Ancient and eternal Father God, Divine Lord, we call upon you here and now: Let us experience your presence among us. Let the divinity within the spirit of this your servant, ________, speak for you to the divinity within the spirit of each of us. May each of us hear you well.

Listen to my voice of the ancient and eternal Father God. I have spoken under many names, in many forms and guises. Still I whisper from every primal law and animating force of the vast Universe. I who am without form formed the galaxies, all their stars and planets, and everything therein. You and all My children dwell forever within Me, who am your Creator and Destroyer. You know My voice, and you hear Me, for I call unto you from within you. Strike singing bowl or ring bell. Pause for silent meditation.

Divine Lord, hail and welcome!

Response: Hail and welcome!

Everything is possible for us, who are divine by virtue of the divine child, the flowing spirit, the Awen, that is ever born from the union of the Goddess and the God within each of us.

Sing invocational chant(s).

Central Working

Celebrant may lead Participants in working appropriate for occasion, or Participants may share with one another as inspired to do so, and all may share sacred meal of cakes and ale, saying, “May you never hunger/thirst,” and responding, “Blessed be.”

Sing conclusional chant(s).

Leavetaking

In this Temple of our own construction, protected by the Guardians of Power, Love, Truth, and Life; supported by our Kindreds of past, present, and future; moved by the Deities that are our primal generative archetypes; and inspired and empowered by the flowing spirit, the Awen; we have successfully performed our rite, beginning again and ever advancing the unending process of the transformation of the entire Universe.

The purpose of our gathering is now accomplished and complete; therefore, let us bid farewell to the Deities, Kindreds, and Guardians, and let us deconstruct the Temple.

Divine Lord and Lady, we thank you for having given us the intimate experience of your presence in our rite. Though we now bid you farewell, let us not forget that you remain with us and within us always. Lord and Lady, hail and farewell!

Response: Hail and farewell!

Kindreds of past, present, and future, we thank you for having joined us in our rite. Though we now bid you farewell, let us not forget that all places and times remain ever connected. Kindreds, hail and farewell!

Response: Hail and farewell!

Guardians of Life, Truth, Love, and Power, we thank you for having protected us in our rite. Though we now bid you farewell, let us never forsake the cardinal aspirations you represent. Guardians, hail and farewell!

Response: Hail and farewell!

Starting in West, circumambulate Temple anti-sunwise, saying: The Circle is open but unbroken. So mote it be!

Response: So mote it be!

Finally, we relinquish our claim on this place that is not a place and time that is not a time, a here and now that are, after all, like every other point and moment in the Universe, returning our Temple to its ordinary state until we have need to consecrate it again. Our blessing, however, having been cast into the Well of Fate can never be withdrawn or erased—ever will this place and time remain blessed by our rite. So mote it be!

Response: So mote it be!

All is One. We have come from the Universe, remain ever within the Universe, and will return to the Universe, sustained by our once and future faith in Nature. Merry meet, merry part, merry meet again! Blessed be.

Response: Blessed be!

Recess from Temple, singing recessional chant(s).
